Martin Sheehan, director of communications for the Maine Heritage Policy Center, joined Ray and Ted to talk about the state government and an issue that Ray has flagged over its supposed hiring freeze.
Also on the show, Lt. Gen. Michael Dunn called in to talk about the F-22 Raptor program, something that has dramatic impact right on jobs right here in Maine, as well as our national security.

Two observations from today's show.
First, Ray I completely agree with you that this new position should be filled by someone already in state government. I only way I see to justify a new hire is if there is no one currently in the department that has the qualifications.
Second, the F-22 Raptor is vital to our national defense. Our current fleet of fighter aircraft is starting to get long in the tooth. Although the F-15, F-16 (for the Air Force) and the F/A-18
(for the Navy) continue to be lethal aircraft they lack the capabilities that the F-22 provides.
I fear that this and other important national defense programs will be cancelled by President Obama for two reasons.
First, he pledged on the campaign trail to cut defense spending "to the bone." Second, he has to do something to satisfy the peacenik crowd that helped get him elected.
He's already begun the process to lessen our defense capability and endanger the safety of the country. I fear the trend will only continue which will result in hundreds of thousands more Americans unemployed and a hamstrung military that still hasn't fully recovered from Bill Clinton's cutbacks. I fear for the worse.

The military drawdown you refer to was started by George H W Bush.
When I moved to a military base in Belgium in Fall of 91 it had already started.
It was called the "peace dividend" remember. Thank you Ronnie for single handedly conquering the Soviet Commies
If I was working for a defense contractor as you were, I guess I would not want defense cutbacks either.
There you go, another blame Clinton statement. As long as the right keeps blaming Bill for everything, I might as well keeep blaming Dubya.
Being a "peacenik " is a terible thing. I guess we should all want war all the time just to keep our defense contractors busy.
Wasn't it a Republican who warned us about the military industrial complex becoming too powerful.

Well, As Ronnie said, "There you go, again." We agree on something else. We both would like to see and end to war. I've seen war up close and personal, and it's a terrrible, terible thing. But the reality of our world today is that there are times when we have to fight. My issue with the peaceniks is that they don't believe in defending anything, except maybe their right to protest and burn our flag.
You are right that That Bush 41 did start the drawdown and that was a big mistake. However, Clinton didn't do a thing to slow it down.
It would be great if we, or any other country, had to have armed forces for protection and we didn't have to have any industry to provide their equipment. However, that is a time that neither one of us will ever see. So, with the reality of the world such as it is, with radical Islamic terrorists vowing our destruction by any means necessary, and with mentally challenged dictators out there just waiting to get their hands on any weapon of mass destruction to use against us, then I firmly believe that we must remain strong militarily to meet the threat.
To do otherwise would be insane.
