There's a new sheriff in town

A recent survey reveals that 8 in 10 Mainers are against raising taxes to bridge the budget gap. So now Democrats in the Maine legislature have a powerful new opponent beating back their efforts to increase the sales tax: The Maine people.

Ray,
If you are talking about the 34 page report by Marketing Decisions.
Although I applaud their philanthropy for putting their time and effort into educating us,
I wish they would not put their spin at the top of each set of results and just let people read the charts.
example
57 percent sounds different to someone as opposed to "nearly 6 out of 10" They could say less than 6 in 10 and give it a different spin.
Just from that observation I "understand" the report to have have a bias.

This does not mean I am against budget cuts or in favor of lots of taxes, but I think Market Decisions is playing games with figures like lots of folk do
So don't put this forward as an unbiased survey.

PS we did raise the sales tax by a penny many years ago. The legislature said it was temporary and it was and it got us through a shortfall in the eighties, during another GOP presidency
OK i am ready for your long winded response now.

No long winded response this time.

Just a couple of points.

1) These guys are not some conservative group who is using their personal philosophy to make a point

2) I don't usually put a lot of stock in polls, however, this one points overwhelmingly to the same conclusion I hear everyday from the average, working person

3) I am surprised anyone would think that Maine people can afford more in taxes at a time when gas, fuel and food are through the roof price wise.

Government can and should tighten its belt.

Fortunately, Maine people are finally on to their game and this time, I pray, there will be consequences to their actions at the ballot box.

A tax increase is a failure of leadership to stand up to special interests.

For me, it is just that simple.

Ray,
Still, my point is
they bias their report by posting their conclusions at the top of each graph instead of letting us interpet the graph on our own. Your "average" Mainer can figure this out.
To me "somewhat disatisfied" with something should not be combined with "strongly disatisfied" to make the point. Let them stand alone

Ray,
COS
Regarding this mornings show and your school punishment statement.
Sounds like you are all for teachers being allowed to use corporal punishment
At what age should corporal punishment stop being used in the school?
Let's face it, the only time someone is going to hit someone else is when they are either not thinking clearly or they are reasonably sure the person they hit can not hit them back harder.

Having to resort to corporal punishment is a failure on the part of the person using it.

And, believing in God has never stoped someone from killing someone else. You were off base this morning on the lack of God in our society causing the mass murders that happen occasionally, which although headline makers, are a small percentage of the murders that happen every year in our country usualy by a family member or lover.
People can have strong social values without religion.

Finally, finally it appears the people of Maine have had enough of the games the circus called our Democrat majority legislature continue to play at our expense. Put simply, the hardworking and underpaid people of Maine can not afford more taxes. I agree completely with you, Ray. What in the world is Madame Edmonds thinking? It's been well past time for the people to send a clear message to the Democrats in Augusta. The time is now. If we don't stand up now and fight this sales tax increase proposal, the people of Maine will suffer even more. Enough is enough.

Ray,
This morning Mr. Bragdon was giving statistics about a retired couple making over $14,000 would not be eligible for Maine medicaid, but a family of four could make up to $43,000 and still be eligible.
I am not retired yet so I am not up on that, but is the retired couple on federal medicare already?
I admit my ignorance of the issue.

I guess I should not have expected an answer to my question.
I don't know why you hvae to ask Bragdon.
You seem to have all the answers to our financial woes in Maine.
By the way, you really lost it yesterday when you were ranting about your personal issues with the Maine Revenue Services.

PS
We spent 3 million in 57 articles in 36 minutes at our town meeting last night.
