MTA: Out of touch again

The Maine Turnpike Authority is at it again. Fortunately, when the Maine people become aware of their European adventure, this will probably kill the talk of new tolls on 295.

Ray, from what I understand the MTA goes to this type of convention each year this is not the first time. Would it make a difference to you if it was being held in NY or Cal and the cost were much less. Also ray, the toll fee is not a tax. A tax is something that I have to pay even if I do not use the service provided by that tax. Example School systems, Fire department, social services, etc. The turnpike is there for my use but if I do not use it I do not have to pay. Thanks for your time I enjoy the show

There are many facets to this situation.

One, why five people and why these five people? Where are the people who would actually implement the new toll system and why are they not on this fact-finding trip?

Two, after a lot of bad publicity over "the wrong impression," surely someone, somewhere at MTA could have said, "How does this look?"

Three, why is it so expensive? I am a curious guy and as such, planned such a trip on the internet. Even being terribly extravagant, I was hard pressed to spend over $3,500 for flight, very nice hotel, car rental, food and booze (should we pay for their booze) and convention registration.

Four, yes, in this were in NYC or Cali and they were sending these five people, I would still have a problem with it.

Five, why not tele-conference? I know Maine's government struggles with technology, but we need to find a way to embrace and cut costs.

Lastly, this particular toll is not much different than a tax. IF, IF, IF they had kept their promise and removed the tolls years ago, our regular tax dollars would be paying for this road's upkeep. Also, it is the only reasonable entrance into Maine from down south. Route One (free) is a beautiful ride for leisurely day, but it adds over an extra hour to getting to Portland.

Thanks for responding
