Sticking it to Maine oil dealers

The Maine State Housing Authority and its director Dale McCormick are penalizing Maine oil dealers just because they can.

I am so "upset" over the whole DHHS controversy pretty much all the recent talkings about on the show. I have been an avid watcher since 2005ish and used to enjoy watching you're shows. I am a 20 year old wife and mother in the Augusta area and am reciving health care through the state of Maine. My husband works hard and is not offered health insurance at his current employer and with a 7 month old baby I am not going without health care. I am a stay at home mom, and yes, I could work, but day care is not the best place for my son and I don't want other people teaching him different morals and having different beliefs then my husband and I do. We therefore are on a fixed income which is on the very lower end of the scale and we work hard to pay the bills and save. We are about 2,000 dollars a year higher then the bracket for food stamps and other state assistance programs. Recently we just moved and haven't been able to foot the bill for oil so we've been putting 50 dollars in everyweek going back and forth with K1. These programs help people like myself and my family and we shouldn't have to choose between providing clothing and food for our families or buying heating oil. Yes some people that are in the system do get bad raps for cheating the system but others really do need these programs and it seems like we get put down for getting assistance. My husband works, he has just as much right as the next person does to get some help from time to time. We have also been on food stamps at one time and it, for us anyway, was embarrassing using them at the check out counter, but for me, you do what you have to do and be HONEST about it.

Thank you for your comments, but you have missed the point entirely.

I do not begrudge you getting assistance and a helping hand up when you needed. That is part of what makes our nation special and as a people blessed by God, we should offer our neighbor a helping hand up when they need it.

The heating assistance issue is vastly different than food stamps. Dale McCormick, the head of MSHA is requiring any oil company that delivers oil to a LIHEAP (low-income-heating-assistance-program)customer to be offered a 7 cents discount per gallon on the current retail price. McCormick is doing this because she can. She has a history of being anti-business and this is just another example of doing something that looks good in print and has an awful consequence in practice.

LIHEAP is largely funded by the Federal government and adminstered by the states. While the state legislature did kick in some funds last year (for the first time)this money comes from our federal tax dollars. McCormick and her crowd believe that government is the answer and the people are too pathetic to look after themselves so they impose their will simply because they can. It is socialism and wrong, but it looks compassionate and people walk around saying, "Oh, thank you for looking out for those less fortunate."

Your husband is a hard working guy. You say he makes little money. Have you ever wondered why wages are so low in Maine? Largely, not completely, but largely it is due to poor public policy that is killing good jobs for Maine people. Our income in Maine is about $5,000 less than incomes in other states. It is "MAINE POLICY" that is hurting Maine people.

Back to the food stamps. I do not begrudge you getting help. If you, however, stay on the program as a career, then you are part of the problem. You do not have a right to expect that my family and other families around the state will go without so you can get assistance your whole life.

If you are seeking temporary assistance as you and your husband and child get your lives going, I am okay with that as long as you are drug free and taking good care of your child. If, however, you stay on assistance indefinately, you are driving up the cost of government, driving up the cost of insurance and are part of the reason why Maine is failing.

I wish you and your family well and I am GLAD you are able to recieve assistance as you get started. I only ask that you make good decisions, take care of yourself and your family and get off assistance as soon as it is reasonably possible.

By the way, I applaud you staying home with your child. My wife and I made the same decision and waited until our children were in school before she returned to the work-force.

May God bless you and your family

Ray
